Tomasz Chyła Quintet – Lightness, amazing energy, fire on stage, interpretive freshness are all features of this quintet.
One of the best young bands on the Polish jazz scene. They are from the Tricity area in northern Poland. The band’s greatest achievement was winning the Grand Prix of the 40th International Jazz Juniors Festival in Krakow in December 2016. The Tomasz Chyła Quintet has performed on European and Asian stages. The musicians have been invited to China, Taiwan, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy and Spain.
They entered the Polish scene of improvised music, proving that young Polish jazz is growing in strength. The shows of the young band are known for their incredibly expressive, virtuosic performances of soloists and energetic, common and open improvisation of the entire composition, which does not conflict with a taste for a simple form and melodiousness. This is a perfectly defined vision of the music that the band’s leader has – Violinist Tomasz Chyła who invited his friends, excellent musicians, to collaborate with him.
The band has released four albums so far: ‘Eternal Entropy’ in 2017 (Polish Radio), ‘Circlesongs’ in 2018 (Polish Radio), ‘Circlesongs in Polish Radio 3’ (Polish Radio), and ‘da Vinci’ in 2020 (Alpaka Records). In November 2023, their fifth album, ‘Music we like to dance to’ (Alpaka Records), will be available on the market.
Their latest production, ‘Music we like to dance to,’ is an invitation to dance together without unnecessary theorizing and complicated contemplations. This album is a musical sincerity that allows the listener to find what they need in the moment. Progressive rock riffs intertwined with beautiful melodies remind the audience of the functionality of music that has served us for centuries. Listening to the tracks on the album will make you feel like you’re at a great party, where the music electrifies your entire body, and you won’t even realize when you start dancing.
The album was recognized as the Album of the Year 2023 in the JAZZ TOP 2023 survey conducted by the renowned Jazz Forum magazine. This is a huge honor and evidence of the positive reception that the band’s music is receiving. Additional distinctions include Tomasz Chyła’s second place as Musician of the Year, and the band’s second place in the acoustic band category.
On February 22, 2024, the Phonographic Academy announced the nominations for the most important Polish music awards, the Fryderyks. Tomasz Chyła Quintet received nominations in the Jazz Music – Album of the Year category, while Tomasz Chyła received a nomination in the same category as Musician of the Year.
